Ancien Hôtel d'Andlau-Klinglin

This private mansion was built in 1734 by Jean-Martin Pfundstein (1680-1742) on the site of a Renaissance building whose original spiral staircase in the courtyard has survived. Its street frontage is a striking example of the combination of traditional Germanic features with early 18th-century French tastes. The two oriel windows overhanging the street and the high roof studded with skylights are traditional local features. The symmetrical pink sandstone façade heralded the Louis XV style inspired by classical times. From 1737 to 1790, this building was the headquarters of the Cathedral Chapter’s Great Provostship. From 1807 to 1823, it housed the Diocesan Seminary then until 1828 the Academy. The local schools inspectorate took the property over after 1918. In 1928, it was occupied by the head office of the Port Autonome de Strasbourg1.
