Marché-Neuf square

Built on the site of the former medieval garden of the Cathedral Chapter’s provostship, the square was named in 1738 when it was purchased by the city and developed as a town-planning scheme. The municipality constructed three lightweight sheds in the centre of the square to be used by merchants. In 1841, under the administration of Mayor Georges-Frédéric Schutzenberger, tall plane trees were planted giving the square its present-day appearance. The sheds were replaced by market stalls selling fruit, vegetables and fromage blanc1.
