Place de la République

Place de la République was previously an imperial square and the focal point of the new city’s urban development. The beating heart of the city’s political and administrative powers, it was a showcase for the German Empire The square was developed in 1880 and lined with massive buildings – the palais du Rhin (the old Imperial Palace), completed in 1888, the National Theatre of Strasbourg (the old parliament building) built in 1892, the National University library, completed in 1895 and the public treasury and the prefecture, built between 1907 and 1911 to house Reichsland ministries. The ginkgo biloba trees dotted around the garden were planted at the end of the 19th century and were a gift to Kaiser Wilhelm II from the Emperor of Japan1
