Place Gutenberg

Place Gutenberg was one of the city’s political and economic power centres, from the Middle Ages right up to the Revolution. Its importance was underlined by the buildings surrounded it, which included the Monnaie (mint), the Chancellery and the Pfalz, or Town hall, none of which exist today. In 1529, St. Martin’s Church was pulled down to make way for the expansion of the square. The Neubau, the extension of the Pfalz, was built between 1583 and 1585 and today houses the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The square took on its current name in 1840, with the inauguration of David d’Angers’ statue of Gutenberg1.
