The Palais Rohan

The Palais Rohan is the former Episcopal residence and was built between 1732 and 1741 for Cardinal Armand-Gaston de Rohan-Soubise, Prince Bishop of Strasbourg. The building was inspired by the great mansions of Paris, with façades emphasising a classic verticality and sumptuous, rococo-style interior decoration. The Palace also features a courtyard and a terrace overlooking the river Ill. During the French Revolution, it became Strasbourg’s town hall and then in 1805 the Imperial and Royal residence. From 1872 to 1884, it was the seat of the German university and nowadays houses the Archaeological Museum, the Decorative Arts Museum and the Fine Arts Museum1
