Egyptian House

This building dating from 1905 epitomises the trend for eclectic architecture at the time, marked by the development of Art Nouveau as much as the interest in forms and colours from the Orient. The “Egyptian house”, named for the decorative features on its façade, was the work of Franz Scheyder (1876-1949), a self-taught Alsatian architect and appreciator of the unusual. The painted decoration by Adolf Zilly represents two Egyptian figures, lotus flowers, papyrus and birds as well as geometric motifs. Figures of bats adorn the balcony railings1.
