Botanical garden

Botanical studies require a large collection of plants. An initial botanical garden was established in 1619 on the site of the former Saint-Nicolas-aux-Ondes Dominican monastery in the Krutenau district. It was transferred to the current site in 1884. Buildings on the cutting-edge of the technological innovation of that time were erected to house and grow these plants inside the botanical garden: the greenhouse complex – destroyed by a hailstorm in 1958 and replaced in 1967 by the current botanical institute; the aquarium greenhouse or the Victoriahaus, today named the Anton de Bary greenhouse in homage to the institute’s founder, as well as an alpine garden, and ponds for the aquatic plants and the institute. The facilities form an integrated complex dedicated to the teaching of botany1.
