The Town Hall

Johann Reinhard III, the last count of Hanau-Lichtenberg, hired Joseph Massol, the architect of the Episcopal residence, to build a new residence, more attuned to the style of the time, to replace an existing mansion. Massol’s Regency-style design was modelled on the mansions of Paris, in a horseshoe style around a courtyard. The façade is decorated with carvings inspired by hunting, warfare and mythology. The building was taken over during the French Revolution and became the Town Hall in December 18051.
